FC Barcelona Signs Anthony Gordon in Surprise €80m Deal

Barcelona, Spain, 5/28/26:

At 1:59 AM EST on Wednesday, May 27th, Fabrizio Romano first reported that Barcelona and Newcastle were in direct talks over winger Anthony Gordon, and only 12 hours later the deal was finalized. The final package sent to Newcastle United is €70m plus add-ons for a total of €80m (~$93m USD), marking the first major transfer of the 2026 summer transfer window. The move largely came as a shock for a variety of reasons, being that Barcelona isn’t a club known for making big transfers recently and relying on homegrown La Masia talent as well as the depth at the winger position and the quickness of the transfer itself.

Again, the transfer came as a shock as the time between the first rumor and official finalization was only 16 hours and took place only three days after the conclusion of the Premier League and LaLiga seasons. Barcelona have not been known to be a club to spend much money on transfers in recent years following the drastic overpays of Ousmane Dembele and Philippe Coutinho for $172m and $157m respectively in 2017 along with the botched signing of Antoine Griezmann for $139m in 2019, instead preferring to develop homegrown players. This strategy has worked out rather well for the club, as it’s produced the likes of Lamine Yamal, Pedri, Gavi, and Fermin Lopez among others, but this marks the most expensive Barca signing since the transfer of Frenkie de Jong for $100m in 2019. Additionally, Bayern Munich also reportedly also offered $93m to Newcastle for the winger, however the Magpies chose to do business with Barca instead.

Gordon, 25, mainly plays the left wing with the ability to play up front at striker or on the right, and is known for his strong pressing abilities as well as his goal scoring prowess. The forward, also called up for the England squad for the upcoming World Cup, scored 17 goals in 46 matches played for Newcastle in 2025-26 and has a total of 59 G/A in 136 matches for the club since his debut in the 2023/24 season. Aside from his statistics though, Gordon’s pressing also sticks out when watching him, making him a perfect fit for manager Hansi Flick’s high-line tactic at Barca, which prioritizes forwards pressing up the field and winning the ball up front and creating a high volume of scoring chances

The move does not come without questions though, as Barcelona already have depth at the winger position with Lamine Yamal, Raphinha, Marcus Rashford, and Roony Bardghji leaving little room for more. As a result of this signing the Barca starting eleven will likely be shuffled around, whether we see Raphinha move to the right wing or get less playing time altogether, which is a popular suggestion among fans even though when on the pitch he’s shown to be world class. The arrival of the new left winger is especially not great news for Marcus Rashford, who is without a contract at the end of the season with the decision of whether to bring him back or not up to the club now. Rashford, who looked good in limited minutes for Barca and had 15 G/A in 1761 minutes, would cost somewhere in the ballpark of $35m for the club to bring back, which may be too expensive for a club that already has three elite wingers and the young and promising Roony Bardghji waiting to get some playing time for himself.

Also in surprising Barca news, the club is apparently ready to submit a bid of over $116m for rival Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez. BlattNews will be evaluating that as well as the rumored transfers of Bernardo Silva and Josko Gvardiol in an upcoming article later tonight.
