Julian Alvarez Rumored to Barcelona

By Wyatt Blatt

Barcelona, Spain, 5/31/26:

In the final few months of the 2025-26 LaLiga season, It’s been sparsely reported that Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez wants out from the club and favors FC Barcelona as a destination, although those reports have been largely disputed by Atletico management as they have repeatedly stated that they will not be transferring their star striker and the information is completely false. That is, until leading soccer reporter Fabrizio Romano reported on the morning of Thursday, May 28th, that Barca are preparing an initial offer for the Argentine international as well as how Alvarez told Atleti that he plans to leave the club months prior. The story has unfolded dramatically since then, with Barca sending an official bid, PSG and Arsenal supposedly being involved, and Alvarez apparently only wanting a transfer to Barcelona.

Alvarez, a World Cup, Premier League, and Champion’s League winner with Argentina and Manchester City, joined Atletico from Man City for $110m and has since scored 49 goals in 103 matches for the club. Also known for his pressing abilities, Alvarez is a great fit in Hansi Flick’s high line tactic at Barcelona, which prioritizes winning the ball upfield and creating a high volume of chances for the forwards. In contrast, his attacking abilities have largely been suppressed at Atletico under manager Diego Simeone, whose highly defensive ‘haramball’ tactics create few chances for attackers, which along with the club winning zero trophies in his time there have pushed the striker to explore leaving.

Barcelona are also currently in dire need of stability in their striker position, as club legend Robert Lewandowski has officially left the club following the 25/26 season and looks on towards retirement, while Ferran Torres has been largely inconsistent when splitting time with Lewandowski. With doubts that the club can seriously compete in the Champion’s League with Ferran as their starting number nine, Barca are in the market for a superstar striker as they have reportedly been monitoring Victor Osimhen of Galatasaray and Joao Pedro of Chelsea in addition to Alvarez, however there have not been many reports seriously linking the first two with Barca, as the club is prioritizing Alvarez. Earlier in the week Barca signed Anthony Gordon, a winger also known for his pressing ability for $93m, signaling the effort to bolster their attack with pressing forwards to fulfill Hansi Flick’s vision of the high volume attacking of the high line.

This saga has not been without its drama though, with several reports detailing the situation, while Atletico remains adamant that they will not be selling Alvarez. As stated previously, Fabrizio Romano first reported that Alvarez wanted out from Atletico and that Barca were preparing to send an official bid for the player, followed up by a subsequent report from Fabrizio that Barca had officially sent a $116m offer and that the player officially told the club that he wants to leave. However, Atleti held that they will not be selling Alvarez and went on to attack Barcelona for “creating fake news” and “lying about our player’s [Alvarez] intentions’ while saying that Julian “has no plan to leave” and has not mentioned wanting out, despite several of the sports highest level journalists reporting the opposite.

However true Atletico’s claims are, it has since been reported in the following days that Barca will not give up on the transfer of Alvarez and that the management will continue working despite Atletico making negotiations difficult. In addition to that, it was reported by German Garcia Grova of TyC Sports on May 31st that Alvarez had officially informed Atletico that he doesn’t want to continue his career there and that he wants a move to Barca, corroborating the report of Gaston Edul, an Argentine reporter, that “Julian Alvarez will NOT continue at Atleti next season, I find it almost impossible he continues there. … For Julian, Barcelona is the preferred option” and that Atletico is simply just delaying negotiations to increase the transfer fee. Additionally, he also reported that Atletico does not intend to sell Alvarez for anything less than “a fee close to $175m” and that the club knows it will be very difficult to keep the player.

While the story is still developing, a transfer to Barca looks like the most probable outcome as the club is set on the move while the player wants it too, despite Atletico wanting to keep him. With the unpredictability of the story, it’s hard to know when the next reports will come out and what they may entail, so make sure to subscribe to BlattNews to stay updated.

UPDATE, 6/1/26: It has been reported that Barcelona will up their bid to at least ~$140m for the player and that Barca and Alvarez himself have allegedly personally agreed upon a five year contract despite there being no agreement between the clubs yet, according to Argentinian news source DSports.
